Doreen Moreno has a passion for working on issues affecting underserved communities by bridging her professional skills in public policy, advocacy, communications, and community engagement to address issues of equity, inclusion, and advancing the political representation of multi-ethnic leaders. Currently, she is the founder/principal of DSM Public Affairs Consulting where she has had the opportunity to manage political campaigns and strategy, communications, and advocacy efforts for healthcare projects such as increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates and increasing access to healthcare for Latinos and other vulnerable populations.
Her professional background includes a 35-year career in the Public Affairs arena working in both the public and private sectors in healthcare, education, government, transportation, and communications. She previously served as the Director of Government and Community Relations for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland for 7 years and spent 12 years as Associate Director of Government and Community Relations for UC Berkeley. In addition, she worked for UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, and CSU, Fresno providing outreach and recruitment of low-income and underrepresented students to provide access to higher education. She has also worked for elected officials; serving in Chief of Staff and policy analyst positions.
Doreen has a long history of community involvement which started in Fresno where she was born and raised. Her childhood included her family’s involvement in the United Farm Worker movement, grassroots community organizing, and political campaigns to elect Latino leaders. She was exposed to Cesar Chavez’s leadership on labor and civil rights and was present in rallies and marches that were led by Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and many other community activists who paved the way for labor rights, equality, and social justice. Her upbringing led to her life-long passion for community engagement and leadership and inspired her professional direction in Public Affairs.
For almost 2 years she has served on the United Latino Voices (ULV) leadership team as the External Relations Lead. In both the 2020 and 2018 mid-term elections, she also co-led ACCIÓN! a West Contra Costa County non-partisan voter outreach and registration effort aimed at increasing Latino and other minority voters in the cities of Richmond and San Pablo.
