United Latino Voices (ULV) is a Contra Costa County grassroots organization with a mission to improve health, education, and economic outcomes for Contra Costa County Latinos through advocacy, leadership development and innovative partnerships with elected officials, public/private agencies, and community-based organizations and advocates.

August - December 2021

Implementing Kaiser “Platicas”, COVID outreach and zoom education grant with goal of reaching over 1000 households.

Supporting West Contra Costa School Multilingual District Advisory Parent leaders in presenting their Spanish speaking parent COVID testing and vaccine issues as well as English Learner Funding issues and recommendations to the Superintendent of schools.

Applied for and was awarded  in partnership with Healthy Richmond a $75,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente to implement “Platicas”, COVID outreach and zoom education to “at-risk” Spanish speaking residents of San Pablo and Richmond.

February 2021 - July 2021

ULV “Platicas” provided 456 East and Central Contra Costa households with COVID mitigation and COVID vaccine education facilitated in partnership with County Regional Medical Residents.

January 2021

ULV and nonprofit One Day at a Time was awarded a $17,500 grant from the Contra Costa Regional Health Foundation to provide zoom “Platicas” sessions to Spanish-speaking school district parents who participate in the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) in Central-East County. The sessions focus on COVID-19 precautions and the care of COVID positive family members living in multigenerational housing.

ULV reached out and met with State Senator Steven M. Glazer’s, East County office in Antioch to bring awareness to the lack of community COVID-19 testing vendors to serve the most vulnerable. The County’s testing contract was revised and awarded to La Clinica de la Raza.

ULV reached out to La Cliníca de La Raza with clinics in the Monument, Pittsburg and Oakley to explore a partnership to expand a model of community pre-post COVID testing and care coordination for this high risk Latinx population living in the shadows of the pandemic.  This partnership also supported vaccine readiness.

Partnered with nonprofit One Day at a Time-based in Brentwood to submit a Regional Health Foundation planning grant to replicate the success of the San Pablo community engagement model in three East County communities.

November 2020

Partnered with County Health Services Latinx & marginalized health task force, Supervisor John Gioia and the City of San Pablo to organize a one-day COVID-19 testing and flu vaccination event, which resulted in over 625 participants, 56% of Latinos being tested for the first-time of which 33% were monolingual Spanish-speakers.

October - November 2020

ULV members met with each member of the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors to request support for culturally and linguistically appropriate strategies to address the high COVID-19 infection and death rates within the Latino community. ULV pledged to serve as a resource to the Board of Supervisors as part of the County’s COVID testing planning and vaccine rollout committees

October 2020

Advocated and secured COVID-19 data by zip code and census tract to identify Latinx hotspots which resulted in the current data now being provided on the County Health Services website under the Healthy Places Index. ULV also advocated and secured improved street signage for the San Pablo and Bay Point COVID-19 testing sites.

Summer 2020

ULV presented a COVID-19 Action Plan to Contra County Health Services to address the coronavirus health disparities affecting the Latinx community.

2019

ULV initiated and collaborated with several non-profits to hold a community vigil to honor the memory of the 22 slain Latinx citizens who were the innocent victims of racial injustice in the mass shooting at Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

2012

ULV partnered with the Contra Costa Community College District to co-sponsor the first Dreamers Conference at Los Medanos College to promote the retention of DACA students in pursuit of a higher education. This annual signature event now rotates between Contra Costa, Diablo Valley and Los Medanos community colleges and now includes community college educator training on educational and financial opportunities specific to DACA students.

2009

United Latino Voices (ULV) was formed as a grassroots coalition of Latino leaders in Contra Costa County with the purpose of addressing the unmet health needs of the undocumented Latino community. Since its inception, the group has broadened its focus to include community priorities in education, economics, and civic engagement.
